COLUMBIA CITY — Because of health issues, one local missionary couldn’t follow her heart to distant lands. But now Miranda Shearer has stopped having seizures and is on her way to Haiti and Slovakia.
Miranda Shearer, daughter of Cindy and Steve Shearer, is on her way to Haiti and then to Slovakia.
Shearer graduated from Columbia City High School in 2004. She received her surgical technologist degree from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne in 2009.
Shearer, 26, feels called to the mission fields and is excited to make her third overseas trip. From March 16 to 24 she will be in Haiti with a group from the First Church of God.
“It’s a dental mission,” said Shearer. “I will assist the dentists and perform surgical sterilization of the tools,” said Shearer.
While there, Shearer will also help teach English (as a second language) to teens in the former communist country.
“Even though we are teaching English to them we tend to feel really inadequate around these teens,” said Shearer. Shearer said most teens from Slovakia come to camp knowing seven languages on average.
