Heuer votes ‘no’ on marriage amendment

January 30, 2014

COLUMBIA CITY — Legislators started their session at the beginning of the year with a full agenda.

One particular item has caused heated debate at the Statehouse — HJR3, the marriage amendment proposal.

The proposed constitutional amendment, which passed the Indiana House Tuesday, now states “only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Indiana.”

Whitley County residents have shared their opinions on the potential constitution change.

Laurie Walls, a resident from rural Columbia City, wrote a Letter to the Editor which appeared in Wednesday’s Post & Mail.

In it, she said she is opposed to HJR3 because she has “many friends and family members who are part of the gay community.”

She goes on to write, “They are all hard-working, tax-paying, freedom-loving individuals who do not in any way deserve to be discriminated against.”
