PIERCETON — An after-school choir, comprised of elementary students from South Whitley and Pierceton Elementary Schools performed at the Whitko Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees meeting Monday night. Whitko After-School Choir consists of fourth and fifth graders under the direction of Patricia Schoemaker. Forty students practice once a week at the school they attend for an hour. The performance Monday was a holiday theme made up of three Christmas songs.
Pierceton Elementary School Principal Eric Speicher informed the school board of his technology goal. Purchasing flashdrives for fourth and fifth grades is a priority, given the need to expose students to computers for projects and assignments.
Since the schools in WCSC received poor ratings based on the Indiana Department of Education’s grading scale early on in the 2012-13 year, administrators have been reevaluating procedures and curriculum in hopes of improving their scores next time the reports are released.
Speicher, along with four staff from PES, recently visited Claypool Elementary School to observe classrooms and teachers.
Speicher said after visiting the school, there will be some ideas he will implement to help use the resources already at PES, but in a more efficient way.
Whitko High School
With scores in hand, Whitko High School Principal Dave Parker was “proud to report” an increase in the students success rate for the End-of-Course Assessments (ECA), a state mandated test for high school students. The test focuses on English and math and is required for students to pass before graduating. Parker reported a 43 percent pass rate for both English and math.
School Superintendent Steve Clason wrapped up the schools’ reports by commending each principal for their efforts.
