Former Indiana Governor Ralph F. Gates was memorialized in a historical marker dedication Tuesday. The marker was installed on the Whitley County Courthouse lawn and was made possible in part by the efforts of Ind. Senator Jim Banks and Ind. Representative Kathy Heuer. COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Courthouse lawn has a new addition to its landscaping.
A historical marker was dedicated Tuesday afternoon to memorialize the late Indiana Governor Ralph F. Gates (1945-49).
Senator Jim Banks and Representative Kathy Heuer were on hand at the ceremony to share the impact the Gates family has had on the community.
“He truly made a difference in this community,” Banks said. “Getting a historical marker is not easy — it takes a lot of work. But I think it is important to celebrate the second governor to come out of Whitley County. We should all be proud of our history.”
The sign, which is on the north side of the Courthouse, is the first historical marker to be placed in the county in more than 10 years.
Banks partnered with Heuer, the Whitley County Historical Society and the Old Settlers Day Association to acquire the marker.
