HUNTINGTON — A night after opening the season with a 5-3 win at home, Whitko softball hit the road for its next challenge in a young but undefeated season.
The trip took the Lady Wildcats to Huntington North and sent them home with a tough 2-1 loss.
Whitko saw a late 1-0 lead in the fifth inning fade over the final two innings to the Lady Vikings.
After four scoreless innings of play, Whitko struck first in the top of the fifth inning.
A single by Chloe Nestel later turned into a 1-0 lead for the Lady Wildcats. Nestel scored from second when Jenny Brown picked up a two-out RBI single.
Coming off a seven-inning win at the mound, Karissa Olinske was back up pitching against Huntington North.
Another complete game landed Olinske on the losing side as the Lady Vikings put up a run on the Wildcat pitcher each of the last two innings.
Two singles and a fielding error tied the game in the sixth inning for Huntington.
Back-to-back hits in the seventh inning gave the Lady Vikings a walk-off 2-1 victory.
The Whitko offense that scored five runs Tuesday struggled at the plate. The Lady Wildcats struck out 14 times and were limited to two hits for the game.
Olinske, now 1-1, surrendered two earned runs on nine hits and five strikeouts.
