IDHS: Distributes 75 all-hazards alert radios to Whitley County

COLUMBIA CITY — Approximately 8,500 all-hazards alert radios were distributed by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) to local emergency management agencies across the state — 75 of them going to Whitley County. The purpose of the radios is to provide early alerts to “at-risk” Hoosiers.

“On average, we’ve received 50 alert radios for the past couple years now, and most of them have been distributed to those who are elderly or low income,” said Whitley County Emergency Management Agency Director Cathy Broxon-Ball.

The EMA is wrapping up distribution of the radios to Blue River Senior Apartments in Columbia City and Churubusco, Countryside Mobile Park in Columbia City and to residents in South Whitley.

“The radios are allocated to go to specific people each year,” said Broxon-Ball. “For the past two years the prerequisite has been senior citizens, low income and mobile home.”
