COLUMBIA CITY — Two Columbia City High School students are going to get a taste of geography and engineering in the coming months. The students will intern at the Whitley County Government Center, one with County Engineer Brandon Forrester and the other with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Coordinator Dan Weigold.
One of the students will intern with the Engineer and Surveyors office from March 5 through May 25, for two hours in the afternoon. Forrester said this is the department’s second internship, the first coming in the 2009-2010 school year.
Something Forrester would like to do is take the student on site, for things like checking progress or doing surveying for a drainage project.
“We’d like to take them out and get them some exposure to GPS surveying equipment,” said Forrester.
Though covering plenty of areas, Forrester said the list of duties and services provided by his office is a lengthy one and hopes to cover as much of it as he can in the time allotted with the intern. “It’s going to be a general exposure of the field of civil engineering. There are things we don’t necessarily do here but we definitely work in all of those fields and have knowledge in them,” Forrester said.
