NORTH MANCHESTER â€” Irene E. Knarr, 91, of North Manchester, died at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 at Peabody Home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Defiance County, Ohio a daughter of J. Edward and Eva (Lehman) Kintner.
She graduated from Sherwood High School and from Manchester College with a bachelorâ€™s degree in elementary education. She received her masterâ€™s degree in education from Ball State University.
On June 1, 1941 she was united in marriage to Richard H. Knarr. They made their home in Pulaski County, Akron and Liberty Mills before moving to a farm in Whitley County in 1946. In 1948 they purchased a farm in Cleveland Township, Whitley County.
Mrs. Knarr was an elementary educator in Whitley County and Laketon Elementary School until her retirement in 1984.
Her memberships included Blue River Church of the Brethren, Whitley County and Indiana Retired Teachers Associations, National Educators Association and the editorial committee for the South Whitley History Publication. During Rev. Knarrâ€™s ministerial roles, she assisted with the childrenâ€™s programs, Vacation Bible School and served as pianist. She enjoyed gardening and travel.
Surviving relatives include seven children, John (Bea) Knarr of North Manchester, Janet (David) Hawthorne of Elizabethtown Pa., Eva (Dallas) Caudill of Lafayette, Elaine (Phil) Weinert of Middletown Pa., Joyce (Bill) Street of Lynnwood Wash., Cheryl (Paul) Thomas of Alakanuk, Alaska and Carol Knarr of Portland; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon, Lowell and Raymond.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation after 1 p.m. Saturday. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to Camp Mack or Blue River Church of the Brethren.
