ISTEP: Preliminary results ‘trending upward’

June 8, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Dr. Patricia O’Connor shared news with the Whitley County Consolidated School (WCCS) Corporation Board concerning preliminary ISTEP results at its work session Monday.
“This is only the preliminary data,” said O’Connor. “I wanted to share with you the trends thus far, and we are trending ever upward.”
O’Connor said third, fourth and fifth graders who took the ISTEP, tested well in English.
“Our third graders for the last few years have been soaring ahead,” said O’Connor. “They are really doing a great job.”
When the state data comes in, O’Connor said she will take that information to see if the schools are continuing to trend well above the state average.
Looking at third, fourth and fifth grade preliminary results in math, O’Connor said she was impressed.
She said the third grade reading scores were also excellent.
“In the English language ISTEP scores for sixth, seventh and eighth grade, you can see significant increases in some of those grade levels,” said O’Connor.
O’Connor said science and social studies continues to trend upward, and she credits the students’ reading skills as being a major contributing factor.
“They are doing a lot of reading and writing, and that’s a reflection to that work,” said O’Connor.
