James Briggs, 96

James S. Briggs, 96, formerly of Columbia City, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 in Dayton, Ohio. He had been a resident of Bethany Village Retirement in Dayton.
He was born Feb. 21, 1914 in Smith Township, a son of Roland Earl and Mable (Stemen) Briggs. He attended Collins School and graduated from Columbia City High School.
On Oct. 24, 1936 he was united in marriage to Crystal Bonetha Larue. They made their home in Columbia City for many years. They resided in Arizona for many years during their retirement. Mrs. Briggs died March 23, 2002.
Briggs was a United States Postal Service rural carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1972. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and fishing.
Surviving relatives include a son, James S. (Mary Ann) Briggs of Dayton, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Deanna Briggs of Shakopee Minn.; four grandchildren, Andrew Briggs of Cincinnati, Michael (Sheri) Briggs of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Richard (Shawne) Briggs of Mendota Heights, Minn. and Mary Briggs Wetzel of Shoreview, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Zoey Clementine Briggs and Mitchel Wetzel.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Earl Briggs, and a younger brother, Robert Briggs.
There was no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in Eel River Cemetery near Churubusco.
