James L. Null, 81, of Columbia City, died at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at Covington Manor Health & Rehab where he had been a resident since Nov. 7.He was born January 19, 1932, in Fort Wayne, a son of Theodore and Mae (Purcell) Null. He completed his education at North Side High School.He began his employment with Bursley which later became Food Marketing. He retired in 1994 with 46 years of service.On Sept. 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Jacqueline L. Bennett. They made their home in Fort Wayne and Gomer, Ohio before moving to Jefferson Township. In 1985 they moved into Columbia City. Mrs. Null died April 24, 1995.His memberships included Coesse United Methodist Church and formerly Eagles #1906.Surviving relatives include four daughters, Catherine Aumsbaugh, Patti Hendryx, Janie (Jim) Graves and Polly (Sam) Wireman, all of Columbia City; a daughter-in-law, Joan Null of Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, James Rickie “Rick” Null; his stepfather, Basil Vebert; and a brother, Leslie Null.The funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
