Jean E. Smith, 90, of Columbia City, died at 3:23 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born on March 1, 1921, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Gladys (Sadler) Leamon.
On March 8, 1939, she married Harry Norwood Smith in Kentucky.
She worked for Williams Food Market in the produce department and for many years was employed by Schultz Dime Store in Columbia City, retiring in 1986.
She was an avid square dancer and would attend conventions and belonged to the Dancernauts Dance Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Janis Kelly of Columbia City; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry N. Smith on May 9, 2004; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Nancy Smith on Nov. 4, 2008; grandson, Brian Kelly; and sisters, Martha Ellen (Mel) Hosler and Lois Kaufman.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 am to 1 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pastor Curtiss Johnson will officiate with the burial to follow at South Park (Annex) Cemetery.
Memorials in memory of Ms. Smith may be made to the Whitley County Humane Society or the Whitley County Senior Center.
