Joan L. Johnson, 74

Joan L. Johnson, 74, formerly of Columbia City, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010 at Martin Memorial Hospital North in Stuart, Fla.

She was born April 13, 1936 in Peru, Ind. a daughter of Dalbert D. and Pauline L. (Bruner) Gibson. In 1947 her family moved to a farm near South Whitley from Fort Wayne. She graduated from Washington Center High School.

On Dec. 18, 1954 she was united in marriage to Wayne W. Johnson. They made their first home in Carmel, moving throughout Indiana including Whitley County for many years and later Alexandria, Va. and Deltaville, Va. before returning to Whitley County in the fall of 1998. They began wintering in Stuart in 2004, making Stuart their year round home in August 2010.

She was employed at Blue Bell for many years and Columbia Township School as secretary.

Her church membership was with United Methodist Church, currently in Stuart and formerly in Columbia City.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Wayne; two daughters, Cynthia Jo (Mark) Ryan of Fort Wayne and Elaine M. (John) Berens of Glenview Ill.; six grandchildren, Caitlin and Patrick Ryan and Michael, Michele, Annie and Scott Berens; her mother, Pauline Gibson of Columbia City; and a brother, Kenneth E. Gibson of Indianapolis.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Lewis Gibson.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbia City United Methodist Church, 605 North Forest Parkway with visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
