Joan Mitchell, 84
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Joan Marie Mitchell, 84, of Columbia City, died at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
She was born February 27, 1928, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Roy Cuppy and Ruth (Besson) Stanley.
She graduated from Washington Center High School and Warner Beauty College.
On Nov. 1, 1952, she married Rolland W. Mitchell. They made their home in Indiana and California, returning to Whitley County in 1972. Mr. Mitchell died Oct. 2, 1989.
A beautician for many years, she then worked as a lab technician at La Mirada Hospital in California and Linvill Clinic in Columbia City for many years.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Beth (Carl) Pease of Columbia City; a son, Robin Mitchell of Warsaw; two granddaughters, Rachel Mitchell of Fort Wayne and Grace Mitchell of Indianapolis; three grandsons, Brent (Sara) Gorski of Columbia City, Kevin Gorski of Columbia City and Tim (TaNaya) Gorski of Kendallville; a step granddaughter and step grandson, Nikki (Doug) Whitting and Joey (Candy) Pease, all of Columbia City; four great-grandsons, Austin, Seth and Gabriel Gorski of Kendallville and Noah Gorski of Huntington; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Gorski of Columbia City; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Megan Whitting of Columbia City; two sisters, Margaret (Charles) Richard of South Whitley and Charlotte (Nathan) Turnbow of Churubusco; and five brothers, Charles Stanley of Columbia City, Robert (Virginia) Stanley of Columbia City, John (Roberta) Stanley of Goshen, Bill (Sally) Stanley of Fort Wayne and James (Kathy) Stanley of Delta, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Dick Hanauer; a half sister, Helen Reddy; a sister-in-law, Elaine Stanley; and a granddaughter, Alicia Mitchell.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
