Joann M. Stephenson, 91, of Columbia City, died at 5:43 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where she had been a patient since Oct. 18.
She was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Clarence and Helen (Loutzenhiser) Mowry.
Her formative years were spent in Garrett and Fort Wayne. She completed her education at Central High School.
On Aug. 1, 1958, she was united in marriage to Robert V. Stephenson.
They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1976 when they moved to Turkey Lake near Lagrange.
In 1993 they moved to Columbia City. Mr. Stephenson died July 7, 2004.
She was employed at Superior Companies for 27 years retiring in 1984.
In 1995 she began working for Passages - Second Time Around until 1999 and United Oil/Citgo until 2009.
She was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church and Eagles #2405 Auxiliary in Albion.
Surviving relatives include four grandchildren, Lisa Schmoll of Columbia City, Susan Van de Zande of Garrett, Bobbie Simmons of Columbia City and Robert â€śChipâ€ť Stephenson of Columbia City; 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Wall of Fort Wayne and Vivian Kessler of Garrett.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Virginia L. Elkins; an infant son, Jackie Adkison; two brothers, Eugene Mowry and Donald Mowry; and a sister, Kathryn Bodkin.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
The visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
