KIMBLER SENTENCED: 30-year stint given for attempted murder

November 5, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY— A teenager received a 30-year prison sentence for attempted murder Monday.

Dakota Kimbler, 18, of Rome City, will serve 25 years of his sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction (DOC) and will have five years suspended, to be spent on probation, for attempted murder, a Class A felony.

Kimbler was given a 10-year concurrent sentence for attempted carjacking, a 1.5-year concurrent sentence for receiving stolen property and a one-year concurrent sentence for carrying a handgun without a license.

Kimbler was arrested in December of 2012 after he stole a car owned by Johnny Couch. Couch was driving his car home from work in Pierceton when Kimbler revealed himself. After a struggle, Couch was shot, but Kimbler was subdued before he could escape.

Kimbler had escaped from the Pierceton Woods, a juvenile facility which is near Couch’s place of employment.

Couch spoke at Monday’s sentencing, and testified to the impact Kimbler’s actions have had on his life.

“I have been going to counseling for post-traumatic-stress syndrome,” Couch said. “Physically, I still have chest pains and physical discomfort.”

Couch was shot in the chest. After receiving treatment at a local hospital last December.

While Couch believed there was malicious conduct done to him by Kimbler, he said he was able to survive miraculously.
