Laddie Slavicek, 80

Laddie L. “Ladd” Slavicek, 80, died at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, after becoming suddenly ill at his residence.
He was born in St. Joseph, Mich. May 17, 1933, the son of Anton and Anna (Josek) Slavicek.
Ladd grew up in a large family in the St. Joseph area graduated from St. Joseph High School with the Class of 1951, where he played football and basketball.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War.
He married Jeannine J. Swank March 26, 1966, at St. Joseph Trinity Lutheran Church.
Ladd worked as a private security officer after his marriage, he worked for several manufacturing companies in Michigan and Indiana before retiring from Flex Steel in New Paris in 1998 as a production manager.
After his retirement, they spent their winter months away from Bremen in Naples, Fla., and 10 years ago he and his wife moved to Columbia City to be near their son.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and American Legion Post #98 both of Columbia City.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeannine J. Slavicek of Columbia City; daughter, Lorinda (Kevin) Anderson of Stevensville of Mich.; son, Ken (Michelle) Slavicek, Columbia City; four grandchildren, Connor and Kennedy Slavicek and Chelsea and Paige Anderson; one sister, Jenny (Richard) Plawecki of Marco Island, Fla.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Rudy, Tony and Frederick Slavicek and one sister, MaryAnn Nernberg.
Visitation will be held Saturday, from 10 to noon at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
The funeral service will immediately follow at noon Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Phil Rittner officiating. Memorial bequests in Ladd’s memory may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, Columbia City.
