WARSAW — The Richter name is back at the state finals but it’s with a new face.
Saturday, Columbia City freshman Andrea Richter picked up where her older four-time state finalist sister Haley Richter left off.
Andrea Richter went into the Warsaw swimming sectional final Saturday seeded as the top swimming in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
In her first sectional competition, Richter came away with a title in the shortest race of the day (50 free). Her first championship put Richter in the state finals Friday in Indianapolis against 31 other swimmers in her event.
Along with a second-place finish in the 100 free, Richter helped the Lady Eagles finish third out of nine teams on the day.
Columbia City had a swimmer in every final Saturday.
Three other Lady Eagles recorded a top six finish. Former state finalist Jenna Bosselman was the highest among them with a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Bosselman added a fifth-place spot in the 100 breast before being part of two relay teams to place fourth or better.
Fellow junior Libby Bower took fifth overall in the 100 butterfly. Bower was also part of a third-place 200 IM team that also included Bosselman, Richter and senior Holly Kyler.
In the diving competition, sophomore Audrey Gruettert gave Columbia City a strong fifth-place finish ahead of teammate Adriana Brown in 11th.
Anneke Van Straten helped the Lady Eagles out in both the relays and individual races. Van Straten was part of a fourth-place 200 free and fifth-place 400 free foursome. Van Straten added a seventh-place spot in the 100 breaststroke.
“This is the fifth straight year Columbia City has sent someone to state,” Lady Eagles head coach Phil Stanczak said. “Our girls swam very well. They were a great group to coach and be around.”
Other finishers for Columbia City included: Mandi Wright ninth in the 200 and 500 free, Kristin Hershberger eight in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in 200 IM, Bower seventh in the 100 backstroke, Kyler 10th in the 100 free and 12th in the 50 free.
