GOSHEN — On the heels of the team’s first win, the Lady Eagles came into their first Northeast Corner Conference hoping to start out on top.
But Fairfield’s pressure was too much for Churubusco, forcing a 44-23 loss.
Churubusco didn’t score until 4:30 ran off the clock in the first quarter with a set of free throws by Haleigh Gross.
’Busco’s scorers became more diverse in the second quarter, with baskets by Lacey Pulley, Heather Monk, Morgan Young and another pair of free throws by Gross.
Gross was 6-for-7 from the stripe in the first half.
Churubusco pulled the score to within two (16-14) with 1:43 left in the half.
With three seconds left, Lady Falcon Kelsie Camacho scored a three pointer to close out the half.
Not only did the Lady Eagles face a deficit on the scoreboard, but senior Morgan Young, who has sat the bench for the first three games due to a knee injury, went out with a hurt ankle in the third.
The fourth quarter was much like the rest; Churubusco struggled against Fairfield’s pressure, scoring eight points in the final eight minutes of the game.
The Lady Falcons tallied nine, leaving the final score 44-23.
Churubusco is back in action Tuesday at Woodlan.
