SOUTH WHITLEY — Saturday dawned cold and damp, and the Whitko softball team had trouble warming up against the visiting Heritage Lady Patriots.
After working out of a first inning jam, the Lady Wildcats gave up seven runs in the top of the third inning. Despite a late-game effort the Lady Wildcats fell in a non-conference matchup by an 11-2 score.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, the Lady Patriots strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases against the home standing Lady Wildcats.
An apparent run-scoring error by the Wildcat shortstop was ruled to be runner interference on the Lady Patriot base runner, nullifying the run and retiring the side.
The Wildcats benefitted from a Heritage error allowing leadoff hitter Maddie Gawthrop to reach. Gawthrop went to third on a single by catcher Hannah Himes, but a strike out ended the Wildcat threat.
