Learning the numbers

Amy Pettigrew’s class at Churubusco Elementary School and co-teacher, Carol Sebastian (pictured) used a life-size ten frame to help children gain a better understanding of the base 10 system in math class. Teachers used the students to create groups of fewer than 10 and more than 10 in order to compare numbers. The project allowed students to receive a real-time understanding of what is more and what is fewer, which can be difficult concepts for kindergarteners. “When we teach this in lessons, ten frames are smaller on paper and use chips or counters to show ten,” said teachers. “However, here we used our life-size frame and kids as counters.”
