CHURUBUSCO — The IHSAA Class 2A Churubusco Boys’ basketball team stepped up a class Tuesday night when they played host to the 3A Leo Lions.
The schools’ enrollments weren’t the only difference, as the Lions came into the contest with a high-powered offense averaging over 84 points-per-contest, while the Eagles were scoring slightly under 47 points-per-game.
The sharp contrast continued on the defensive side as the Eagles came into the game giving up just under 43 points each game, while the Lions were surrendering over 79 points-per-contest.
In the end it was quality over quantity that prevailed as Churubusco put up just a bit more than half as many shots as the visiting Lions, but hit a blistering 68 percent from the field to come away with a 77-68 win on its home floor.
“I thought Chris Jones, Dylan Jones and Austin Goepfrich were the real keys tonight,” Eagle Head Coach Michael McBride said. “What a great job they did to sacrifice their own shots so that we could take advantage of what we thought Leo defense would give us.
“I think a lot more of the credit than is going to show up in a stat line goes to them. They are the reason why Tyler (Arrowsmith) and Josh (LeFever) were able to put up 54 of our 77 points.”
The work of Chris Jones and the Eagle guards resulted in a lot of close range shots which helped the Eagles hit 32-for-47 shots from the field for the game.
