Marjorie J. Saffer, 89, formerly of Columbia City, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Hamilton House in Fort Wayne where she had been a resident since January 2010.
She was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Leon B. and Blanche V. (Layman) Williams. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne. She graduated from South Side High School.
On Oct. 13, 1945, she was united in marriage to Robert J. Saffer. They made their home in New Jersey until 1947 when they moved to Fort Wayne. In 1960, they moved to South Whitley until June 2003, when they moved into Columbia City. Mr. Saffer died April 2, 2009.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church.
Surviving relatives include five children, William J. (Kathi) Saffer of Fort Wayne, Barbara (David) Renner of Fort Wayne, Beverly (Thomas) Adams of Lafayette, Betty (Greg) Fetro of South Whitley and Bonnie (Tony) Crowe of Columbia City; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Robert L. Williams of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a sister, Doris J. Leamon of Fort Wayne.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Williams.
The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 South Line St., Columbia City, with visitation one hour prior at the church. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will also be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
