VFW â€śBuddy Poppiesâ€ť
The VFW will be distributing â€śBuddy Poppiesâ€ť Friday and Saturday as a way to fund raise exclusively for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans as well as the widows and orphans of deceased veterans.
VFW #5582 poppies will be available at People Federal Savings Bankâ€™s downtown branch on South Main Street and Ace Hardware located on Diplomat Drive.
Memorial Day parade
The Memorial Day Parade through Columbia City will be Monday.
The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Walnut Street and end at Greenhill Cemetery. For information about the parade, contact Joe Pittenger at 610-4493.
Burr Oak Baptist Church will be holding a Nelsonâ€™s barbecue chicken fund raiser to help with their missions trip to Buenos Aires.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. chicken will be available in the Walmart parking lot as well as pit-tatoes.
The cost for chicken is $6 for one or $11 for two and pit-tatoes will be $3. For more information contact Andrew Brown at 246-9734.
Ice Cream Social
The Cleveland Township Fire Department will host its Annual Ice Cream Social June 16 at 4 p.m.
The event will take place at the Cleveland Township Fire Department and will feature homemade ice cream, hamburgers and desserts.

S. Whitley Elem. awards program
South Whitley Elementary invites the community to the end-of-the-year â€śFirst Class Bulldogsâ€ť convocation Wednesday, May 30.
The program will honor those students who have demonstrated good citizenship during the third trimester at South Whitley Elementary School.
The program begins at 1:45 p.m. in the school gymnasium.
Eagle Tech Academy will celebrate the completion of its launch year by hosting an open house Tuesday, May 29.
The community is invited to tour the facility and view projects completed by students.
Those wanting to know more about Eagle Tech will have the chance to talk with staff, students and parents.
Eagle Tech will hold two open house sessions, one in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon. The evening open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
Burnworth pool opens May 26-28
Burnworth pool will be open early this Saturday through Monday, from noon to 6 p.m.
Starting May 31, the pool will be open every day.
Hours are Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Swim team sign up has started and begins June 4.
The swim lessons schedule for the summer is:
â€˘Session 1: June 11-22 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. classes.
â€˘Session 2: July 2-13.
â€˘Session 3: July 23-Aug. 3.
Pool parties can be scheduled Wednesday thought Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Northern Ind. Lakes Festival
This yearâ€™s Northern Indiana Lakes Festival will be June 9 at Center Lake in Warsaw from 5: 30 a.m.- 8 p.m. It will continue on June 10 at Winona Lake from 6 a.m.- 4 p.m.
The Northern Indiana Lakes Festival is a celebration of one of the areaâ€™s most precious natural resources - water.
The Northern Indiana Lakes Festival increases awareness of and appreciation for lakes through education, experience, fun and celebration.
Highlights included a ski show by the Lake City Skiers, canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding around Center Lake and the inaugural Water Waddle Kidâ€™s Fun Run.
