Salvation Army open house todayToday the Salvation Army will celebrate its 75th anniversary in Whitley County with an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. The new office is located inside the First Church of God on 1200 DePoy Dr. The open house happens to be on “Donut Day” so refreshments will be offered. When entering the church, use door five and enter the second door on the left. Humane Shelter auction and banquet May 19The Whitley County Human Shelter will hold an auction and banquet May 19 at Eagle’s Nest Event Center. Doors open at 5 p.m.CCHS Choirs spring show May 18, 19 and 20The choirs of Columbia City High School will be presenting their spring show May 18, 19 and 20. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7 p.m. Sunday performance begins at 2 p.m. The cost is $9 for ages 13 and up, $6 for 12 and under. Purchase in advance by contacting a show choir member or purchase at the door. SGCS staff recognition night May 21Smith Green Community Schools will be celebrating staff members with 10, 20 and 30 years of service as well as six retirees. They will be honored with a reception starting at 6 p.m. prior to the May 21 board meeting at the Smith-Green Community Schools cafeteria. Light refreshments will be served. The public is invited as the school acknowledges these award recipients. At 7 p.m. the regularly scheduled SGCS Board of School Trustees meeting will be conducted. Everyone is welcome to attend.Dining with Diabetes begins May 30“Dining with Diabetes” is a program for people with diabetes and their families. This four-week cooking school will be held on Wednesday evenings, May 30, June 13, June 20 and June 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Whitley County Extension Office, located at 115 S. Line St. in Columbia City. This curriculum reflects current advances in diabetes nutritional education and also takes into consideration today’s busy lifestyle. Emphasis is placed on the addition and importance of fiber and calcium in the meal plan. The class schedule is: May 30: “Special Occasions and Desserts – Looking at Sweeteners and Carbohydrates”; June 13: “What is Diabetes?”; June 20: “Main Dishes – Looking at Fats and Sodium”; and June 27: “Side Dishes – Looking at Fiber.” Cost is $25 per person for all four sessions and $15 for the second person in a family.
