LARWILL – The Moody Chorale, conducted by Dr. Xiangtang Hong of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, will be performing Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at West Etna Community Church near Larwill.

Food Bank
drive is Saturday, Jan. 14
SOUTH WHITLEY– Food/monetary donations will be accepted Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 a.m.-noon at Dollar General in South Whitley. All donations will aid the South Whitley Area Emergency Food Bank.

Herb Gatherers
to meet Jan. 16
COLUMBIA CITY – There will be a meeting of the Whitley County Herb Gatherers on Monday, Jan. 16 at the Peabody Public Library at 7 p.m.
There will be a short meeting followed by a lesson an fennel; this herb’s history is as interesting as its flavor.
There will also be time to discuss general topics related to gardening.
If there is inclement weather on Monday, please call Sharon at 260 244-5306 or Ro at 260 244-6512 to see if the meeting will be cancelled.
New members are always welcome.

‘Share an Ancestor’
at Jan. 19 meeting
of Genealogy group
COLUMBIA CITY – The Whitley County Genealogy Society will meet Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m.., in the Peabody Public Library.
The program is “Share An Ancestor.” Ancestors do not need to be famous, just a family member you would like to share. Anyone is welcome to come to the meetings; you need not be a member.

Fire & Ice Festival
Jan. 21-22
COLUMBIA CITY – It looks like the weather will chill out considerably in coming days -- just in time for the Whitley County Fire & Ice Festival Jan. 21-22.
The Whitley County Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia City will be festooned with dozens of unique ice sculptures, carved by artisans at the weekend event. Additionally, groups and organizations will offer their wares and treats throughout the downtown area, making for a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy wintertime out of doors.

Eagles Auxiliary 1906
to present grant to Riley Children's Hospital
at Jan. 22 luncheon, event
COLUMBIA CITY – The Columbia City Eagles Auxiliary 1906 will make a grant presentation to the Indiana State Auxiliary for Riley’s Childrens Hospital Sunday, Jan. 22.
There will be a lunch from 12 to 2 p.m. that day, along with music by Melvin Mullins until 5 p.m.
The event is open to the public.
“We thank the community for its kind contributions to our raffles and would welcome all to our special day of recognition,” said Sharon Geiger, Eagles Auxiliary spokesperson.

to converge on Churubusco Jan. 25
CHURUBUSCO – The Whitley County Spelling Bee will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Churubusco High School beginning at 5 p.m.

STAR to host 6th Annual
Ag Forum
January 25
COLUMBIA CITY – STAR will host its sixth an-nual Agricultural Forum, Wednesday, Jan. 25.
The luncheon will take place at the Eagles Nest Event Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Dr. David Kohl, agricultural economics expert, will present “The Wild World of Global Economics and Kitchen Table Economics.”

Whitley County 4-H Open House Jan. 26
COLUMBIA CITY – A 4-H Open House is scheduled for all families and young 4-H Members at the 4-H Center (West Room) Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
The 4-H Open House will last approximately one hour. Information about enrollment, projects and other activities will be available.
This will be a great opportunity for families who are not familiar with the 4-H program or are just starting 4-H to ask questions and gather information, note 4-H organizers.
Enrollment forms will be available. Open enrollment for Mini and Regular 4-H will be starting in February through April 2.
Enrollees may start enrolling online in February by visiting the 4-H website at or by calling the Purdue Extension – Whitley County Office at 260-244-7615 or 260-625-3313 to request an enrollment form.
Those 4-Hers who were enrolled in Mini or Regular 4-H last year will be mailed an enrollment form by the end of January.

New GED session
coming Jan. 28
COLUMBIA CITY – The Four County Vocational Adult Education program offers GED Preparation classes in Columbia City at the Huntington Excel Building, 220 Frontage Rd.
Classes are on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m.-noon and are taught by a certified teacher who will work with individual students based on their academic needs.
Classes meet 12 hours per week. Students must attend a program orientation prior to attending classes.
The next Orientation is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Super Bowl Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS – The 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee has announced dates and times for the musical performances in the Super Bowl Village that will start on Friday, Jan. 27.
Two stages – the Pepsi Stage at Meridian and Georgia Streets and the Verizon Stage at Pen-nsylvania and Georgia Streets – will host bands daily through Super Bowl Sunday for the public to enjoy for free.

Festival of Ice to be hosted
at Timbercrest on Feb. 11
NORTH MANCHESTER – Timbercrest Senior Living will host the Festival of Ice, an ice carving event, on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. until noon. The event will be held on the Timbercrest front lawn.
Two ice carvers will be onsite to turn ordinary blocks of ice into works of art.
One of the carvers, Stan Horne, has competed in international ice carving competitions, including the BP World Ice Art Championships in Fair Banks, Alaska.
He also started the Fire and Ice Festival, which draws thousands to Columbia City each year. Columbia City’s event is Jan. 21-22
The two carvers at Timbercrest will complete a total of six sculptures over a three-hour period, so there will be lots of activity throughout the entire morning. Attendees can bundle up to watch the festivities outside or there will be seating inside for those who would rather not be out in the cold.
Many organizations are participating in the North Manchester event.

Fort’s Home/Garden Show
is March 1-4
FORT WAYNE – The 39th annual Fort Wayne Home and Garden Show, the largest consumer event in Indiana’s Tri-State area, is the perfect place to find the latest home and garden ideas and products to make your home springtime ready.
This year’s show takes place Thursday, March 1 through Sunday, March 4 at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Avenue. Show hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
For nearly 40 years, over 41,000 visitors – including gardeners, decorators and do-it- yourselfers – have discovered unique ways to reinvent their humble abode through hundreds of experts all under one roof.

Whitley snowbirds
will roost awhile
in Sebring March 6
SEBRING, Fla. – The Columbia City High School Alumni Association will host its annual Snowbird Luncheon for all citizens of Whitley County on Tuesday, March 6.
The Florida luncheon and get-together will start at 11:30 a.m. at Homer’s Original Smorgasbord, 1000 Sebring Square, located on the southeast corner of U.S. 27 and Sebring Parkway.
This is billed as “a casual get-together for you to enjoy with family, friends, classmates and alumni of Whitley County, Indiana.”
There is no reservation required for this event. Luncheon amount is $10.97 per person, plus tax, at the door.

COLUMBIA CITY – Kindergarten Round-up dates have been established in March for Whitley County Consolidated Schools..
Parents are instructed by school officials to call each elementary school office to set up an appointment time for the appropriate date.
