Martha Virginia Meier, 91, went to be with her Lord at 2:15 am, Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at her home at Round Lake. She was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Gastonia, N.C., a daughter of James Andrew and Mary Myrtle Gladden Cobb. Her formative years were spent in North Carolina where she graduated from the Lowell High School in 1939.
On Aug. 4, 1941, she was united in marriage to John R. Meier and they made their home in the Westgate addition of Columbia City until moving to their present home at Tri Lakes 48 years ago. Mr. Meier preceded her in death March 30, 2000. A graduate of the Ravenscroft Beauty College in Fort Wayne, she operated Marthaâ€™s Beauty Shop from 1943 to 1955 and retired as the head cashier at the Columbia City Kroger Store in 1978. She was a member of the Tri Lakes Baptist Church, the Old Bats in Red Hats Club, Whitley County Senior Center attendee, The V.F.W. Auxillary and was a past Worthy Matron of the Columbia City Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving relatives include daughters, Virginia L. Wright of Columbia City, Lynda K. (Tim) Mix of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; brother, Grier Cobb of Lowell, N.C.; sisters, Jimmie Kate Johnson of Lowell, N.C., Emma Shuler of Gastonia, N.C., and Sarah Richardson of Lowell, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; son-in-law, Duane C. Wright; grandson, Steven Michael Wright; four brothers and five sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Tri Lakes Baptist Church with Pastor Brad Frederickson, officiating.
The burial will be in the South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, and one hour before the service at the church.
