Martha K. Shaffer, 86, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:02 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 at The Oaks in Columbia City.
Born Jan. 25, 1925 in New York City, she was the daughter of Ellsworth G. and Florence (Harris) Samo.
She attended Walton High School, New York City. On Feb. 28, 1947, she married James N. Shaffer in Towson, Md.
In 1947, she moved to Rochelle Park, N.J. where her five children were born.
Between 1963 and 1971, she lived in Ramsey, N.J., Verona, N.Y., Bettendorf, Iowa and Pittsburgh. She worked her adult life as a devoted housewife and loving mother.
Survivors include her children, James (Judy) Shaffer of Summerfield, Fla., Kathy (Dr. Gary) Trout of Mifflintown, Pa., Robert (Kimberly) Shaffer of Herbison, Mich., Kim Shaffer and Dawn (Alan) Ramsey both of Columbia City; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, James N. Shaffer Sr.
Visitation is Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following calling at 1 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
Pastor Gene Rohrer will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorial gifts may be given in memory of Mrs. Shaffer to Midwest Assistance Guide Dogs or Heartland Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
