Mary Slagal, 89

Mary L. Slagal, 89, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Columbia City, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at her home.
Born July 19, 1923, in South Bend, she was the daughter of Rollie J. and Alberta J. (Anderberg) Howe.
She attended Riley High School in South Bend. On Aug. 13, 1938, she married Russell D. Slagal in Elkhart.
A former resident of Tri-Lakes, she moved to California in 1977, where she worked for Singer-Kerfott, St. Marcos, retiring in 1988. In 1990, she returned to Whitley County and since 2009, she lived with her daughter in Fort Wayne.
Surviving relatives include her sons, Larry (Kathleen) Slagal of Carlsbad, Calif. and Terry Slagal of Fort Wayne; daughters, Dixie Dowell of Syracuse and Rusty Beauchamp of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Slagal; a sister, Wilma Kling; brothers, Robert, Jack and Walter Howe and a great-grandchild, Nicole Goetz.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City.
The funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The burial will follow at St. Matthew’s (Hively) Cemetery, Columbia City.
Memorials may be given in memory of Mrs. Slagal to the American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
