COLUMBIA CITYâ€” The title â€śmayorâ€ť can mean a variety of roles and responsibilities, dependent on who sits behind the desk and what city that desk is in.
Several of Columbia Cityâ€™s Councilmen agreed that the cityâ€™s mayorâ€™s position is worth more than its current salary â€” $56,600.
â€śI want to come up with a plan to pay our mayor more,â€ť Councilman Dan Weigold said. â€śWhen you look at what all Columbia Cityâ€™s mayor is responsible for, itâ€™s quite extensive â€” heâ€™s running a multi-million dollar operation.â€ť
Weigold was referring to the cityâ€™s utilities. While Columbia City provides its own water, electric and sewer utilities, other cities donâ€™t.
â€śLooking at evaluations of other citiesâ€™ mayors, the pay scale is all over the place,â€ť Weigold said. â€śSome donâ€™t have utilities to deal with, some do. I think itâ€™s fair to say our mayor needs to be paid adequately for the work thatâ€™s being done.â€ť
In the U.S., the average salary for a mayor is $62,000 â€” nearly $6,000 more than Columbia City pays its mayor.
Weigold made mention of the communityâ€™s questions of whether the mayorâ€™s position is full-time or part-time.
