Melvin E. Kistler, 85

Melvin E. Kistler, 85, of Columbia City, died at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted on May 9.
He was born February 25, 1929, in Elkhart, a son of Ralph and Ruth (Patterson) Kistler. His formative years were spent in Whitley County. He completed his education at Larwill High School.
August 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dona Jean Ross. They made their home in Larwill and Warsaw areas before residing in Duke, Okla. for 15 years. In 1993 they returned to Kosciusko County. Mrs. Kistler died January 23, 1994. In mid 1990s, Melvin moved to Columbia City.
A truck driver, he was employed at Republic Gypsum and lastly for SDI as a security guard.
Surviving relatives include four children, Betty G. Kistler, Marilyn J. (Posey) Lester and Melvin Dean Kistler, all of Columbia City and Patty Turner of Oklahoma City Okla.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Bruce A. Kistler of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by a son, Marvin J. Kistler; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Merle Kistler.
The funeral service will be held at noon Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday at the funeral home. The burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton.
Preferred memorials are to the final expense account made payable to Smith & Sons Funeral Home.
