MISCONDUCT: Wilkinson pleads guilty to sex charges

October 18, 2013

Wilkinson

COLUMBIA CITY— A Columbia City man accused of sexual misconduct with a minor pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.

Chais A. Wilkinson, 19, was arrested in September.

He was charged with sexual misconduct with a minor as a Class D felony. The minimum sentence is six months and the maximum is three years.

When reading the charges, Judge James Heuer said Wilkinson performed or submitted to fondling with a 14-year-old female victim.

Wilkinson will be sentenced Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.

It will be a court decision later if Wilkinson will need to register as a sex offender.

“I am not sure if it is required by the Class D felony,” said Wilkinson’s attorney, Brad Baber.

Whitley County Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said the state could have pursued a Class C felony charge, but did not as long as Wilkinson agreed to plead guilty to the D felony.
