Morris W. Darley, 92, formerly of South Whitley, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at the Peabody Home, North Manchester where he had been a resident since September 2008.
He was born Dec. 6, 1918 in Midland, Mich., a son of Ralph William and Marie (Morris) Darley. As a young boy, his family moved to South Whitley. He graduated from South Whitley High School and continued his education at Manchester College and Purdue University.
On Nov. 21, 1940 he was united in marriage to Ruth Penrod. They made their home in the South Whitley area until 2008 when they moved to Peabody Retirement Community. Their winters were spent in Naples, Fla. from 1980 until 2007. Mrs. Darley died June 25, 2009.
He worked for Edgar Sherbahn and from 1951 until 1980 was owner/president of D & C Construction.
His memberships included South Whitley United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of Trustees; a co-leader of Explorer Post 85; South Whitley Library Board President; and Director of Naples Estates Villagers Association.
Surviving relatives include four children, Janice (John) Whitt, Alan (Bethany) Darley, J. Rex Darley and Scott (Rhonda) Darley, all of South Whitley; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a sister, Helen Hollinger of Goshen.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at South Whitley United Methodist Church, 6685 W State Road 14 with visitation after 10 a.m. Visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
Burial will take place at a later date at South Whitley Cemetery.
