SOUTH WHITLEY — Reinvigorating South Whitley is a priority for the town’s plan commission and town council, but the efforts are being spearheaded by Julia Robinson.
Robinson is the leader of Whitley On the Move, an organization in South Whitley working to affect positive change and revitalize the town.
Community members met in October and November to generate ideas for improvements. A slew of varied ideas were given to help breathe new life into the town’s recreation, economic state and attractions.
“There were pages full of suggestions,” Robinson said. “Looking over the lists, there are some ideas that cost a lot of money, but there are some we could do in the meantime that would cost next to nothing.”
Robinson decided to lead the charge after seeing North Manchester’s success in reviving its downtown area.
After holding open forums for residents to offer their suggestions, Robinson formed four committees to work on planning projects to be completed in 2013.
Creating a trail network within the town limits is a project the Recreation and Health committee is working on. Arts and Promotion committee would like to see art work by Whitko High School students displayed in empty storefronts. Developing new businesses is the focus of the Economic Development committee.
The Design committee is charged with the mission of beautifying the town. Robinson believes this project goes hand-in-hand with the Economic Development committee’s mission to attract more business.
Each of the committees will meet to entertain more ideas and map out steps to tackle some of the items already mentioned.
Robinson hopes the mix of thoughts will not only bring fresh ideas to the surface, but create a closer sense of community.
