COLUMBIA CITY — Following many years of minor problems, Coesse Middle School is close to replacing the windows above the gymnasium.
Tony Zickgraf, business and operations manager for Whitley County Consolidated Schools, said that in the 17 years he has worked for the district, attempts have been made to seal the leaks, all of which were unsuccessful.
Zickgraf said the type of windows currently installed are translucent fiberglass designed to let light in, however the most recent investigation shows due to weather conditions the glass is beginning to wear.
Money was placed in the district’s Capital Fund several years ago for the project and Zickgraf was seeking approval for those funds to be released to proceed with the replacements.
Gibraltar Design is the company recommended for contracting the work. Gibraltar – an architecture, engineering and interior design firm based out of Indianapolis – has completed nearly 1,000 projects for schools in Indiana.
Zickgraf estimates the cost for Gibraltar at just under $5,500, with a total project cost of nearly $70,000 once factoring in the cost of the windows.
“We believe the project is certainly worth spending some of the capital fund on,” Zickgraf said.
Approval was given by the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of Trustees to proceed with the next steps in the process, which are final cost determination and specific designs for the project.
The board will still have final approval on proposed plans and financing prior to any physical work beginning in the gymnasium.
