NO SURPRISES: Gillette wins Vets Marathon for fourth time

November 12, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Taking home first-place honors at Columbia City’s Veterans Marathon is nothing new for Justin Gillette.
Gillette has won the marathon in all four years of its existence.
Gillette, 29, Goshen, finished with a time of 2:34:28.56, six minutes ahead of second place finisher Doug Powers, of Clinton, Iowa.
Gillette ran a pace six minutes faster than last year’s winning time.
Three Whitley County runners placed in the top 60, led by Austen Davenport, of Columbia City.
Davenport, 26, came in 12th with a time of 2:55:52.12.
Churubusco High School cross country standout Connor Hogeston, 17, placed 25th and was the only runner in the top 30 who was under 21.
Luster Roush, 46, father of Columbia City High School state track and cross country qualifier Samantha Roush, came in 57th with a 14-minute personal record, 3:29:34.28.
