ONLY MEMORIES REMAIN: Former Thorncreek School in process of demolition

A pile of bricks and rubble covered the floor of the former gymnasium at Thorncreek Township School before demolition began on the building last week. The current owner of the property, Dave Meinika, said the building was unsalvagable, and is being demolished for safety reasons.

COLUMBIA CITY — While Thorncreek Township School may have looked the same on the outside as it did 20 years ago, the inside looked like a scene from a scary movie.

Walls were knocked down, copper wire was stripped, graffiti covered the walls and many items inside were looted.

When David Meinika purchased the old school in 2012, his goal was to clean up the property, which was becoming an eyesore and safety issue to the Thorncreek community. This month, crews began tearing down the building.
