COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Park Department’s Opening Day Ceremony for youth league baseball and softball set for Saturday has been postponed.

The games on tap for Saturday have also been postponed.

Park Director Mark Green said excessive rain has caused the fields at Morsches Park to become overly-saturated.

“Our fields are soaked,” he said. “Having events of this size would put too many vehicles there.”

Green explained the fields would probably be okay to play on Saturday, but the problem lies with having so many ball players with their families parking their vehicles on the grass at Morches.

“We have a river going through our park right now that shouldn’t be there,” he said, referring to the wet conditions.

There will be an event planned at some point this summer to honor all of the ball players as well as the sponsors, Green said.

He said the date for that event has not been determined.

He also said the baseball games that were set to be played Saturday will be made up as well.
