OPERATION GUARDIAN: Marshals nab local offender

May 8, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — A federal sweep put a Whitley County man in jail for failing to register as a sex offender.

DeWayne Stewart was convicted in 2004 of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old and child seduction and did not register, adding him to a list of targets, along with hundreds of other fugitives nationwide.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Stewart in Huntsville, Ala., officials said in a press release.

Another area man, Mark Lautzenheiser, a convicted rapist from DeKalb County, was also arrested for failing to register as a sex offender and violating his parole.

The two arrests came as part of Operation Guardian, a program that sought out some of the nation’s most dangerous unregistered sex offenders.
