COLUMBIA CITY — With consistently warmer temperatures, Columbia City parks and recreation is opening the Splash Pad and the pool as a way to beat the heat.
Mark Green, park director, said the Splash Pad opens today at noon.
“We’ve had a lot of calls about that,” said Green. “It’s going to be hot this weekend so we’ll be open from noon to 8 p.m. every day.“
Green said the pool opens this Saturday at noon.
“We found out unfortunately yesterday that our heater is out,” said Green. “The park board has decided that instead of spending $17,000 to repair it, they are going to do what a lot of other community pools do, and that is not heat their water.”
The park board will let the sunlight heat the water.
Green said the people who will be most affected by the water heater will most likely be the kids who take swimming lessons in the morning, but he said the gas bill should be much lower.
The Burnworth pool will be open Saturday through Monday, from noon to 6 p.m.
The pool will later be open for summer every day starting on May 31.
Hours are Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Swim team sign up has started and begins June 4.
