July 20, 2012

FORT WAYNE — A local pastor, on a mission of community service died Thursday as the result of an accident involving a vehicle driven by his wife and quick thinking by people at the scene couldn’t prevent his death.
Rev. James A. Haugen, 67, of Columbia City, died of blunt force trauma after being backed over by his wife, Darleen K. Haugen, 64, at the Community Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne, according to Fort Wayne police.
Police reported a call was made at about 9:13 a.m. Thursday of an accident involving a pedestrian.
When first responders arrived, food bank employees had freed Haugen from under the minivan by lifting the vehicle off the victim with a forklift.
Haugen was the pastor of Living Water Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake.
Haugen was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses told police that Haugen was behind the vehicle guiding the van to the dock when he became caught under the vehicle and trapped as the van continued in reverse.
