CHURUBUSCO — History is being recreated for the Churubusco Main Street Project in the form of a Popcorn Stand Mural that is now finished by students of Churubusco High School.
Art students Gretchen Meinzen, Morgan Beverly, Kayleen Mitchell, Gabby Jones, Savannah LeFever and Sydney Hunsberger worked for over a month on the black and white mural of Clarence and Fern Brumbaugh’s popcorn stand that sat on the corner of Main and Whitley streets in Churubusco from 1929 to 1942.
Chuck Jones and Chuck Mathieu, co-curators of the Churubusco History Center, along with Frank Kessler, Churubusco Town Council president and member of the Churubusco Main Street Project, were responsible for getting the project started.
“The mural will be placed on the northwest corner of the Lucky Lady building at the corner of Main and Whitley streets where the popcorn stand originally sat,” said Jones.
Under the tutelage of CHS art teacher Shanna Fleetwood, the students, all juniors except Meinzen (a senior), studied the original photo of the popcorn stand with several children eating popcorn while Brumbaugh served them.
Meinzen, who will study art at the University of Saint Francis in the fall, is excited about her part in history.
“This is a big deal to have painted this mural,” said Meinzen. I’ve never had anything like this happen to me, at least not this big. I’ve had pieces on display at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, but this is going up permanently. This is exciting.”
