COLUMBIA CITY — On May 11, the Columbia City Fire Department is welcoming the Fire and Life Safety Dog, Kasey.
Kasey, a black Labrador Retriever, and firefighter Jeff Owens, as part of Koorsen Fire and Security, travel the country performing “an exciting educational program that teaches children fire and life safety skills.”
“We have the opportunity to have the fire dog come in and do fire prevention for kids,” said Columbia City Fire Chief Tom LaRue.
The fire pooch teaches important messages through demonstration; messages such as how to stop, drop and roll, crawling under smoke to escape and dialing 911 when you have an emergency.
“On command, the dog will use the back of its paw to go up to a door and check for heat on the other side, and from what I understand the kids really respond do it,” LaRue said.
