COLUMBIA CITY â The first forum concerning the future of the Burnworth Memorial Pool took place Wednesday, giving members of the public an opportunity to listen to the assessment, ask questions and give opinions.
Sam Blake, with Spear Corporation, said the 52-year-old pool, which was renovated in 1991, has a number of conditions which need, or will need, to be addressed in the near future, including the pvc membrane (liner), the filtration system and the pool heater.
The assessment, made by HWC Engineering of Indianapolis in conjunction with Spear Corporation, has estimated it will take $1.1 million dollars to repair existing equipment of the pool facility.
During the forum, everyone who voiced opinions were in favor of aquatics as being an important part of the community. But the choices before the public were numerous as they began discussing all the different options before them.
âNothing has been decided on any level,â said Daniel. âThere are a lot of options on the table, and weâve not gone in depth really with any of them because we were waiting to hear what the public had to say at this forum as well as the forum a couple Saturdays from now.â
The public discussed having an indoor pool or outdoor pool, ways to bring additional revenue to the pool, the possibility of fixing Burnworth on short term until money can be raised for another pool, as well as the possibility of partnerships.
âI think there are a lot of options on the table,â said Daniel.
As far as funding, Daniel said dreaming big with a major project is going to take major funds.
âThat is an issue that at some point we are going to have to address,â said Daniel. âIt would have to be a major type of project where we try to get sponsorships.â
Another public forum will be held at the Peabody Public Library Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
