POOL: Second public forum Saturday at 1 p.m.

September 7, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — The second forum regarding the future of Burnworth Memorial Pool will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Peabody Public Library, 1160 E. Ind. 205 in Columbia City.
Concerns about the condition of the pool prompted the first forum, held Aug. 22, where members of the community who attended the meeting shared opinions to members of the city’s park board as well as Mayor Ryan Daniel.
With pool attendance slowly dwindling, the public discussed the pros and cons of several different options, keeping aquatics at the center point for the future of the city.
The public discussed whether the pool should be an indoor or outdoor facility as well as ways to bring additional revenue to the pool, the possibility of fixing Burnworth on short term until money can be raised for another pool, the possibility of partnerships as well as the idea of “thinking big.”
The estimated cost to repair existing equipment at the pool facility is $1.1 million dollars, according to an assessment made by HWC Engineering of Indianapolis in conjunction with Spear Corporation.
The pool, located at 525 North Wayne Street in Columbia City, was built in 1960 and renovated in 1991.
As the park board reviews the many options on the table, nothing has been officially decided on the pool.
Daniel encourages anyone from the community who is interested in the future of the pool to attend the Saturday meeting.
In the last forum, Daniel said the city’s park board has many tough decisions ahead of it, and said he hopes the forums express a clear direction the community wants to take.
