POSSIBLE PICKUP CHANGE: S. Whitley considers moving service day to Thursday

August 21, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — After recently agreeing to a new contract with Advance Disposal, representatives from the company petitioned the South Whitley Town Council to consider changing the days in which trash is picked up.

Jerry Schnitzius, of Advance Disposal, told the council that changing the service day from Tuesday to Thursday would be more convenient for the company.

“This is a totally selfish request on our part,” Schnitzius said. “It would help us keep our routes more efficient and effective.”

Council President Tony Starkey said he was concerned that too much change, too fast, would cause an uprise in some town residents.

“We would give them enough notice,” Schnitzius said. “We would want to allow for a smooth transition if we make this change. I don’t anticipate us making the switch until the end of September.”

Considering that the town’s recycling pick up falls on Tuesday, council members worried having two different days would be overwhelming for the town.

Councilman Steve Smith said Whitley County Environmental, the company contracted for the recycling service, would possibly consider switching days to Thursday as well in order to keep all services on the same day.
