PUT TO REST: Local building authority dissolved

October 28, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County and Columbia City officials agreed to do away with a group that hasn’t been used for more than 20 years.

Recently, the Columbia City-Whitley County Building Authority was deemed inactive and Columbia City Common Council members moved to dissolve the group at Tuesday’s meeting.

“The building authority was great at the time it was created — it was needed and very good for financing purposes — but now we’ve reached the point that it’s better off dissolved,” Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel told the council Tuesday.

“We don’t have any major building projects coming up and I don’t think the county has any projects either.”

The purpose of the building authority was primarily to help the county build its government center, located on W. Van Buren Street, and the Whitley County Jail on Market Street.

The building authority also helped with the remodel of City Hall in the early 1990s.
