Reimers seeks to fill vacant county council seat

October 8, 2010

Thorncreek Township resident Paula Reimers filed her candidacy for the Whitley County Council at-large seat being vacated by unopposed State Senate candidate Jim Banks.
Reimers is one of eight current hopefuls for Banks’ term, which has two years remaining. Banks announced his resignation from the county council, effective Nov. 2 in order to run for the senate seat of retiring Sen. Dr. Gary Dillon.
Reimers said having extensive experience in county government is a major feather in her cap in her quest for the soon-to-be-vacant council seat.
“I’ve had the privilege to work with all of the county councilmen for more than 10 years. As the former Whitley County Coordinator, I rarely missed a council or commissioners’ meeting or budget session.”
Her experience, according to Reimers, will afford her the luxury of not having to learn the job of councilman on the job, but will allow her to hit the ground running.
“I viewed my position as a resource to the county’s elected officials and worked diligently to carry out their decisions,” she said. “During my years as a full-time HR Director/Coordinator for the County, I became familiar with the Indiana Code, Roberts Rules of Order, Indiana’s Open Door Policy, county contracts, Whitley County departments and the political relationships that exist throughout our local government and community. I believe that my experience in county government will allow me to be an effective member of the County Council at my very first meeting.”
After leaving her position in Whitley County government, Reimers went to work for a consulting company that “helps local governments cut costs and improve their services,.”
She said she travels throughout Indiana, advising local government officials on management and human resource issues. “My experience in working with County governments all over the state, has given me a perspective that I believe will be a great benefit to the taxpayers of Whitley County.”
In addition to her consulting duties, Reimers also has maintained a bookkeeping service for 13 years, working with clients to manage payrolls, make bank reconciliations and create financial reports.
Within the GOP, Reimers has served as Whitley County Coordinator for Gov. Mitch Daniels’ campaign as well as treasurer for both State Sen. Dr. Gary Dillon and future State Sen. Jim Banks. She was also selected to join The Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.
Reimers and her husband Scott have lived in Whitley County for 20 years and have two children.
“I’ve been considering seeking this position for several months,” she said. “In fact, I’ve considered running for council for several years, so pursuing this seat is something that I have given a great deal of thought to.”
