Christie Workman, volunteer for Relay of Life of Whitley County, spoke to Columbia City Rotarians on how they could be involved in the fight against cancer.
COLUMBIA CITY â Christie Workman, community editor for The Post & Mail newspaper, told Rotarians about her impassioned involvement with Relay for Life of Whitley County â a civic passion that germinated after covering the annual event for her newspaper readers.
Relay for Life, a division of the American Cancer Society, is a major fundraising and community awareness event in the fight for cancer prevention and in finding a cure.
This yearâs event will be June 7-8 at Indiana Springs Middle School, but the Kick-Off Party will be Tuesday, Jan. 28, 6 p.m. at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Any and all persons â whether individuals, groups of friends or corporate teams who wish to enlist in the fight against cancer in our communityâ are encouraged to attend the Jan. 28 Kick-Off Party.
Workman emphasized that dollars raised locally for Relay for Life remain local, providing funding for transportation to cancer treatments, as well as for such worthy Whitley County projects as free mammograms and the Look Good ... Feel Good program.
Last yearâs Relay for Life walk in Whitley County proved to be record-setter in the region, amassing the high percentage increase in participants and dollars raised, besting the local Relayâs monetary goal by $12,000.
Workman emphasized the emotional involvement of Relay for Life participants, whether they are supporters, caregivers or cancer survivors.
She mentioned of poignant camaraderie during the event, including special laps by cancer survivors, as well as memorial nighttime laps in honor of cancer victims while luminaries are aglow, surrounding the junior high school running track.
Although emotional involvement is a part of Relay for Life of Whitley County, both the Jan. 28 Kick-Off Party and the June 7-8 main event at Indian Springs Middle School offer plenty of fun, laughs, entertainment and good food.
Each yearâs event has a special theme, and this yearâs âtop secretâ theme will be unveiled at Tuesdayâs Kick-Off Party.
Workman emphasized that âthere are powers in numbers,â and encouraged Rotarians, their families, friends and business associates to plan to participate in Relay for Life 2014.
