COLUMBIA CITY â The official start of Whitley Countyâs Relay for Life season begins Tuesday night with a party at 6 p.m. a Parkview Hospital.
As part of the nightâs festivities, food and entertainment will be provided and the 2014 event theme will be unveiled.
Event Chair Cathy Cronin said the party is a way to learn exactly what Relay for Life is about.
âThe kick-off party is open to anyone and everyone who is considering walking in the relay come June,â Cronin said. âIf you donât know what is involved or you are just curious to see what Relay for Life is all about, the party is a great way to get to know us.â
Relay for Life is a 24-hour walk-athon to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, survivor support and patient services.
As part of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life dollars raised in Whitley County go directly for services offered to cancer patients in Whitley County.
âThereâs a lot of misconceptions about the relay,â Cronin said. âPeople ask me all the time if you have to walk the entire 24 hours. The answer is no. You can come for just a couple of laps or put together a team that takes turns walking. All your questions can be answered at the party.â
Event details will be made available at Tuesdayâs party, but Cronin said the relay is set for Indian Springs Middle School on June 7.
âItâs hard to describe Relay for Life until you get involved and experience it,â Cronin said. âThe party is a great way to get everyone excited about the upcoming walk and a wonderful way to welcome those that want to be a part of relay for the first time.â
